Business Challenges

On June 30, 2022, the FCC required all non-facilities-based voice service providers (VSPs) to comply with STIR/SHAKEN regulations and have all telephone calls on the network signed by a certification authority to limit the rise of robocalls and SPAM. The challenge for VSPs, including Voiply, lies in the technical complexity and time required to update their telephone network to meet the regulations, which can be catastrophic for their bottom line. For Voiply, the STIR/SHAKEN compliance process involved extensive development work to update their customized phone system servers and reconfigure them so they could sign calls. They worked with a certification authority called Sansay, as well as their engineers, to code through APIs so their network servers could sign calls. “A lot of integration is required when you’re trying to get your own PBXs to sign calls, and we dug into the technical details of integrating with AWS, fusion servers, and much more, with no end in sight,” said Shea Georgetti, co-owner of Voiply. “We had already spent 30 hours on development work, which was taking us away from our services and our customers.”

Solutions From Sangoma

Because Voiply had a close relationship with Sangoma Technologies, as they use its APIdaze CpaaS product, they were informed that Sangoma offered a hosted solution specifically for STIR/SHAKEN call signing. The service provides a hands-off approach, requiring minimal effort from VSPs. The VSP simply sends its calls to Sangoma’s wholesale transport network for call signing via SIP trunks, instead of having to manage all this responsibility through phone system network updates. This eliminates the need to buy, configure, and maintain call signing servers and SBCs, and allows the VSP to focus on its core business. As the STIR/SHAKEN regulation deadline approached quickly, Voiply realized that this Sangoma service was the ideal solution and adopted it quickly.

The Results

To sign their calls, they had to send their outbound traffic to Sangoma’s wholesale carrier services; their SIP trunks were preconfigured to use Sangoma’s hosted call signing service. They only had to provide their certificate. Shea highly praised Sangoma’s hosted call signing service, calling it a “huge time-saver.” Shea said: “Call signing on our trunks meant we didn’t have to configure or adjust our servers or network, allowing us to maintain our existing infrastructure.” This hands-off solution enabled Voiply and any other VSP to become compliant with STIR/SHAKEN with full attestation.
